Tenses
Verbs have different forms which are termed as tenses and it tells us when an action occurs.
2. Modals (have to/had to, must, should, need, ought to and their negative forms)
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs (also called helping verbs) like can, will, could, shall, must, would, might, and should. After a modal verb, the root form of a verb is generally used. The word to should not appear after a modal verb. An exception is the phrase ought to, which is considered a modal verb.
3. Commands and requests
The students have to deal with all kinds of statements while appearing for the final exam. They are requested to follow the guidelines in relation to reporting commands and so on. There are various kinds of reported speech and a student needs to go through each type to get the complete picture. Checking the explanations is as important as preparing for the final exam.
4. Subject-verb concord
This part tries to establish a connection between the subject and the verb. There are some conditions that the subject and the verb have to fulfill. The number and person of the subject must agree with the verb in any given sentence. This agreement of the subject and the verb is termed Concord. There are certain rules for this agreement that you need to check to understand the concept.
5. Use of passive voice
The voice is a form of the verb which talks about the connection between the action that the verb expresses and the participants identified by its arguments. In other words, voice is something that concentrates on the quality of a verb. It tells us whether its subject acts (active voice) or is acted upon (passive voice).
6. Reporting
In the case of reporting the students are asked to transform a sentence. The students are requested to transform a direct speech into an indirect speech and vice versa.
7. Questions
When transforming questions, check whether you have to change:
- pronouns
- present tense verbs (3rd person singular)
- place and time expressions
- tenses (backshift)
8. Statements
The student’s focus should be on the type of statement which he has been given and he must follow the command while transforming various statements.
9. Clauses
A clause is a group of related words; but unlike a phrase, a clause has a subject and verb. An independent clause, along with having a subject and verb, expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a coherent sentence. In contrast, a subordinate or dependent clause does not express a complete thought and therefore is not a sentence
10. Noun clauses
Noun clauses are dependent clauses that can replace subjects, objects, or subject complements in sentences. These clauses start with either interrogative pronouns or expletives.
11. Relative clauses
Relative clauses are dependent clauses that modify or give more information about a noun in the independent clause.
12. Adverb clauses of condition and time
Additionally, adverbial clauses are dependent clauses that modify or give more information about a verb in the independent clause.
13. Prepositions
A preposition is a word or set of words that indicate the location (in, near, beside, on top of) or some other relationship between a noun or pronoun and other parts of the sentence (about, after, besides, instead of, in accordance with). A preposition isn’t a preposition unless it goes with a related noun or pronoun, called the object of the preposition.
14. Determiners
Determiners are words placed in front of a noun to make it clear what the noun refers to
