Important Definitions RD Sharma Chapter 14 Class 9 Maths Exercise 14.2 Solutions
Students can see the definitions and examples on the topics and subtopics of type of the quadrilaterals in the following points. The topics and subtopics are-
- Various types of Quadrilaterals
- Trapezium
- Parallelogram
- Rectangle
- Rhombus
- Square
- Kite
- Properties of Parallelogram
- Some important theorems on Quadrilaterals
Various Types of Quadrilaterals
Trapezium
It is a quadrilateral with one pair (set) of adverse parallel edges/ sides. In the trapezium, PQRS, side PQ is parallel to edges/ side RS.
Parallelogram
It is a quadrilateral with two pairs/ sets of parallel edges/ sides. The reverse sides are parallel and equivalent in length. The reverse (opposite) angles are similar in measure. In the parallelogram, PQRS, side PQ is parallel to side RS, and edges/ side PS is parallel to edges/ side QR.
Rectangle
It is a quadrilateral with all four (4) angles of the same measure. That is, each angle is 90°. Both the pairs of reverse (opposite) edges/ sides are parallel and equivalent in length.
Rhombus
It is a quadrilateral with all four (4) edges/ sides having the same lengths. The opposite (reverse) edges/ sides of a rhombus are parallel, and the opposite angles are the same.
Kite
It is a quadrilateral with two (2) pairs of equal-length edges, and these sides (edges) are adjacent/ consecutive to one another.
Square
It is a quadrilateral in which all the edges/ sides and angles are equivalent. Every angle is a right angle (90° each). The pairs of opposite (reverse) sides are parallel to one another.
Properties of Parallelogram
Properties of Square
- All the edges of the square are similar in measure
- The edges/ sides are parallel to one another
- All interior angles of the square are at 90 degrees (90°- right angle)
- The diagonals of the square perpendicular bisect (divide) each other
Properties of Rhombus
- All the four (4) sides of a rhombus are of the equal measure
- The opposite (reverse) sides of the rhombus are parallel to one another
- The opposite angles are of the similar measure
- The sum of any two adjacent/ consecutive angles of a rhombus is equal to 180 degrees (180°)
- The diagonals perpendicularly bisect (divide) each other
Properties of Rectangle
- The opposite (reverse) sides of a rectangle are the same in length
- The opposite edges/ sides are parallel to one another
- All interior angles of a rectangle are at 90 degrees (90°- right angle)
- The diagonals of a rectangle bisect (divide) each other.
Properties of Parallelogram
- The opposite edges/ side of the parallelogram are of the equal length
- The opposite (reverse) sides are parallel to one another
- The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect (divide) each other
- The opposite (reverse) angles are of the same measure
- The total of two adjacent/ consecutive angles of a parallelogram is equivalent to 180 degrees (180°)
Properties of Trapezium
- Only one pair of the opposite edges/ side of a trapezium is parallel to an another
- The two (2) adjacent sides of a trapezium are supplementary (180 degrees- 180°)
- The diagonals of a trapezium bisect each other in the same ratio
Properties of Kite
- The pair of adjacent/ consecutive sides of a kite are of equal length
- The largest diagonal of a kite bisect (divide) the smallest diagonal
- Only one pair of opposite (reverse) angles are of equal measure.
Keypoints on Types of Quadrilaterals
- Rectangle, Square, and Rhombus are the types of parallelograms.
- A square is a rhombus and a rectangle, but both rhombus and rectangle are not square.
- A parallelogram is a trapezium but, a trapezium is not a parallelogram.
- A Kite is not a parallelogram.
