The Midnight Visitor Summary

Ausable, a clever secret operative, is the hero of the fiction. He spent the evening with a writer named Fowler, who was interested in spending time with a secret agent, but when he meets Ausable, he discovers that he is the polar opposite of what he had expected and that he is a bore. Ausable then informed Fowler that he had been mistaken and that he would be reviewing a report that would alter the country’s future shortly. Then Ausable brings Fowler to his room, where they find a man named Max standing in the room with a revolver.

He told them to relax until the missile reports arrived in 30 minutes, because he was there to grab the reports. When Fowler thought of meeting a secret agent, he believed this to be the first of many adventures. While they were conversing, Ausable began telling a storey about a man who had entered his room from the balcony last month. A startling knock came at the door during this conversation.

Ausable assumed it was the cops, and he asked them to check on him after a while since he wanted the reports coming in to be extra secure. Max, waving his rifle at them, said he’d be waiting in the balcony and that Ausable should send the cops away or he’d shoot them and risk being caught.

Max rushes out of the window as the doorknob is twisted, resulting in a loud scream. When the door opens, a waiter enters and informs Mr. Ausable that the wine he ordered has arrived. He walks away, leaving the bottle, tray, and glasses on the table. Fowler is taken aback and inquires about the police, to which Ausable responds that there are none. Then Fowler inquired about the person waiting outside the window on the balcony, to which Ausable said that the individual would not return and that there was no balcony there.

Ausable’s quick wit is demonstrated here, as he took advantage of the situation and made Max uncomfortable, causing him to jump out the window without thinking and without glancing down. He would have died if he hadn’t jumped from the hotel’s top level. This is how Ausable outwitted Max and escaped a potentially fatal situation.

CBSE Class 10 English Footprints without Feet Summary For Chapter 3- The Midnight Visitor Question and Answers

Q1. How does Ausable manage to make Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room? Look back at his detailed description of it. What makes it a convincing story?

Ans- When Ausable mentions that he had previously complained to the hotel administration about someone accessing his room from the balcony below him, Max begins to consider that if he had known there was a balcony, it would have been much easier for him to get to Ausable’s room. Ausable then tells Max that he needed extra security for the papers that were expected to arrive that day, and that he had informed the cops who were banging on the door to check on him.

This made Max quite nervous, and he decided to wait for the cops to arrive on the balcony. He leaped out of the window without realising it and did not realise there was no balcony. As a result, Ausable’s cool and rapid thinking adds to the story’s credibility.

Q2. How is Ausable different from other secret agents?

Ans- Ausable was unlike other secret agents since he was very overweight, lived in a dingy French hotel room on the top floor, and could only speak French passably despite having lived in Paris for almost 20 years. His tone was still distinctly American. Instead of dark-eyed beauties delivering his messages, he used to get them by phone. As a result, he was considerably different from other covert operatives.

Q3. Who is Fowler and what is his first authentic thrill of the day?

Ans- Fowler is a young writer who meets Ausable for the first time. He’s bored sitting in a music hall with Ausable because he expected the country’s secret spy to be spectacular and exciting, but nothing like that happened. When they returned to Ausable’s room after some time, Fowler noticed a man standing in the room with a rifle. That’s when he realises that being a secret agent can be thrilling.

Q4. How has Max got in?

Ans- Max had used a masterkey or passkey to get access.
