They were not able to live a luxurious life. But Mathilde’s desire was to be rich & she felt annoyed, disappointed, and sad about not having a big house.
She also desired to have pretty dresses, & more. One day, her husband brought an invitation to a fancy party. He thought that his wife would be very excited about seeing the invitation letter but instead of being happy, she threw away the invitation letter and started crying.
She complained about not having a pretty dress to wear on such a great occasion. His gentle husband gave her 400 francs to buy a pretty dress which he had saved to buy a rifle. When the week of the party approached, his wife seemed to be anxious again & was upset as she felt that she didn’t have any jewelry to wear with the dress. Her husband tells her to ask jewelry from her friend Jeanne Forestier.
Mathilde went to her house and borrowed a sparkling necklace. Mathilde & his husband enjoyed the party a lot & she was successful in achieving everyone’s attention. During the odd hours in the morning, they headed for home.
On reaching home, she was surprised at not finding a necklace around her neck. They both felt that it might have fallen down in the cab which they took to reach home.
He also searched on the streets they have come through. He approached the police & gave an advertisement but all in useless. He asked her to write a letter to her friend. She wrote that she had the pin broken and was getting it repaired.
Meanwhile, they were successful in searching for a similar necklace but it cost 36,000 francs. Her husband has taken 18,000 francs from his father & they had to borrow the remaining money.
They managed to buy the necklace through inherited and borrowed money. However, it took them a period of 10 years to repay the borrowed amount. In these years, their lives have drastically changed.
They moved to a smaller apartment where she did the cleaning and cooking on herself & her husband did multiple jobs to repay the amount. She also looked like a strong woman of a poor household. One day, she saw Miss Jeanne Forestier on the street & she decided to tell her the truth about the necklace.
The latter was stunned by the rough appearance of the former. On listening to the truth of necklace, Jeanne Forestier told that it was a fake one that means it was made of artificial diamonds. The worth of it was not more than 500 francs.
