Properties of Determinants

As mentioned before, a determinant is defined as a special number found by using a square matrix. The determinant of a matrix, also known as P, can also be denoted as det P or det (P). To permit an individual for getting similar results with simpler and different configurations of entries, there are different properties of determinants.

Now NCERT Solutions Class 12 Maths Chapter 4 Exercise 4.1 has explained the properties of determinants below. Here is a proper list of the properties of determinants.

  1. Reflection Property: As per this property, if the rows are changed into columns, the determinant remains unaltered. In order to make the property effective, the columns should also change into rows.
  2. All-Zero Property: According to this property, the value of a determinant is zero, if all the elements of a row or column are also zero.
  3. Switching Property: In this property, the interchange of any two rows or columns of a determinant, results in the change in the sign.
  4. Scalar Multiple Property: If all the elements of a row or column of the determinant, multiplied by a non-zero, the determinant will get multiplied by the same constant.
  5. Repetition or Proportionality Property: In this property, if all the elements of a row or column are proportional or identical to the elements of another row or column, then the value of the determinant is zero.
