What will you learn in NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Physics Chapter 2 Units and Measurements?

The chapter, Units, and Measurements let students know about the measurement of the different physical quantities. It also tells them about the international system of units, commonly known as the SI System.

There are two distinct types of quantities, namely, base quantities and physical quantities. Base quantities are a standard of reference for physical quantities. Their measurements are arbitrary and depend on the SI or international system of units. The SI system of units is a widely accepted format to measure both the base and physical quantities.

According to this system, there are seven fundamental units used to measure all the quantities. While the base quantities have a set unit of measurement, the units of physical quantities come from the base quantities themselves. The international system of units also defines symbols for measuring each quantity.

For example, ‘kilogram,’ the unit of measurement for weight has the symbol, ‘kg.’ Similarly, the unit of measure for any liquid, that is, ‘liter,’ is expressed using the letter ‘l.’

The chapter also tells about the methods in which you can derive the units of measurement for each quantity using equations. Such equations originate from a technique called ‘dimensional analysis.’ The dimensional analysis technique also checks for inconsistencies in the equations. Thus, a dimensionally consistent equation need not always be correct. However, dimensional inconsistencies in equations mean that they are inaccurate.

Theorems and Formulae

The chapter makes use of various formulae to explain the concepts. The most common ones include that of speed, distance, and time, as well as the density of different substances. Here, you can find the formulae used for both these quantities along with their units of measurement.

We know that,

Speed = Distance/Time.

So, from this, we can infer that,

Time = Distance/Speed

Or

Distance = Speed * Time.

We also know that time and distance are fundamental quantities having second and kilometer or meter as their units. So, from this, we can derive the unit of the physical quantity, speed, which is as follows.

Since,

Speed = Distance/Time, we get,

Distance/Time = meter/second = Speed.

Thus, we come to know that the unit of measurement for speed is meter per second or m/s.

Similarly, we have the formula for measuring the density of a substance, given by,

Relative Density = Density of Substance/Density of Water.

From this, we infer that,

Density of Substance = Relative Density * Density of Water.

So, in this way, the chapter explains the different base and physical quantities and their units of measurement. It also shows you the methods in which you can derive these quantities and establish relationships between them.
