Smt. Raziya Sajjad Zahir, through her story, narrates the tale of Safia and a Sikh woman, and the bond they shared. When they met, Safia was drawn to the Sikh lady as she reminded her of her dead mother. The lady gets to know Safia’s family is in Lahore, Pakistan and she is going to visit them. Hearing this the lady gets all excited and shares her experiences of Lahore city. Although she is living a well-settled life in India, she still missed Lahore and requests Safia to bring her some salt from Lahore on her return.
When Safia told her brothers, she needed to take some salt for the Sikh lady, they objected as salt is not a permissible material to cross the India-Pakistan border. Safia argues and her brothers give in, so she hides the salt in the bowl of fruits to cross the border. But when she was about to cross the customs area, she tells the officer truth about the salt and says the salt is a token of love for a lady in India.
The officer belongs to New Delhi and lets the salt pass with a message, “Lahore is still her country and Delhi mine and eventually, everything will be all right”.
When Safia reached Amritsar, India, the custom Officer was from Bangladesh, and he reminisced his childhood memories spent in his motherland. After such experiences, Safia wondered what defines a country? Its borders or where our heart lies.
