RS Aggarwal Solutions Class 7 Maths Chapter 19 Three-Dimensional Shapes – Overview

You can define three-dimensional (3D) shapes as the shapes that can get measured from three different directions. You can also call these shapes as solids. The three measurements of 3D shapes are named as length, breadth and height. 3D shapes are totally different from two-dimensional shapes because these shapes contain thickness.

  • Surface Area And Volume Of Three-Dimensional Shapes

You can define the 3D shapes by using two measures

  1. Surface Area
  2. Volume
  • Surface Area

The total area of the surface of a three-dimensional shape or object is called its surface area. It is denoted by the symbol ‘SA’. You measure the surface area of 3D figures in terms of square units.

There are three classifications of surface area:

  1. Curved Surface Area (CSA): The area of curved regions of a 3D shape.
  2. Lateral Surface Area (LSA): The area of the curved regions as well as the flat regions of a 3D shape but the base is not included in this measurement.
  3. Total Surface Area (TSA): The area of all the regions of a 3D shape including the base of the shape.
  • Volume

The measurement of the total space that is occupied by a three-dimensional object or figure and is denoted by the letter, ‘V’. You can measure the volume of a 3D figure only in terms of cubic units. It shows the maximum quantity an object can hold or the maximum space an object can obtain.
