On behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET). UGC NET is conducted twice a year in order to select candidates for only Assistant Professor or both Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges. As per latest media reports, from 2018 onwards UGC NET will be conducted once a year.
Every year, the huge number of candidates appears for the NET. The test is conducted for determining the eligibility for college and university level lectureship and for awarding the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to Indian nationals for pursuing their Ph.D. or research.
UGC NET Exam Pattern:
The paper will be divided into 3 parts:
Paper I: The questions will be general in nature. The duration of the paper will be one hour 15 minutes. The candidates are required to attempt 50 questions. It will carry a total of 100 marks.
Paper II: The questions will be asked from the subject selected by the candidate. It will consist of 50 objective type compulsory questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. Each question will carry 2 marks.
Paper III: The questions will be asked from the subject selected by the candidate. It will carry a total of 150 marks and the duration of the paper will be 2 hours and 30 minutes.

UGC NET Exam Eligibility
For every examination, there is a specific eligibility criteria that candidates have to fulfill if they wish to apply for that examination.
Qualification Eligibility:
The qualifying examination must be passed in subjects like Humanities and Social Science, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science etc.
The percentage of marks required in the qualifying examination is 55% (50% marks in case of SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD categories).
Candidates appearing for final examinations towards a Master’s degree (or equivalent) are also eligible to apply.
Relaxation of 5% marks in qualifying examination shall be given to Ph.D. degree holders (master’s level examination had been completed by 19th September 1991)
Age limit and relaxation:
Not more than 28 years as on November 1, 2017, and 5 years relaxation in the upper age limit will be provided to OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD category candidates. Relaxation will also be given to the candidates having research experience. Candidates possessing LL.M. degree will be eligible for 3 years relaxation in age.
